App store creatives that convert

Your app store page is won or lost in about 7 seconds — here's what the data says converts.

The first screenshot does most of the work: it drives roughly 60% of the install decision, and visitors decide in about seven seconds — half of that on just the first one or two images. If your first frame doesn't state the core benefit, you're spending ad and ASO budget to lose people at the door.

How much can creative actually move? Screenshot A/B tests produce an ~11.8% median conversion lift across hundreds of tested variants, and changing just the first screenshot has moved conversion 15–30% in controlled tests. Custom Product Pages (CPPs) — separate store pages tied to specific campaigns — lift conversion 18–26% over the default; one subscription app went from a 42% to a 56% store-page conversion rate after building a structured CPP programme.

A method that holds up in practice:

1) Lead with the outcome, not the UI. The first screenshot should answer 'what do I get?' in a glance — a benefit headline over a real screen, not an app-chrome tour.

2) Test one variable at a time. Swap the first screenshot alone before you touch the set; if you change five things you learn nothing about which one worked.

3) Use CPPs to match the message to the source. A page for a 'meal planning' ad should show meal planning first — matched creative is where most CPP lift comes from.

4) Refresh on a cadence. Creative fatigues; the best teams re-test quarterly, not once at launch.

Two cheap wins most teams skip: localise the screenshots (not just the text), and caption every image — many users read the overlay text, not the UI.
